Food for thought: all those Caucasian actors in Hollywood adaptations of manga -UPDATED

The American animated TV series Avatar: The Last Airbender is not made in Japan, but its creators took inspiration from manga and various aspects of different Asian cultures, resulting in a story with identifiably Asian settings and characters. A Hollywood adaptation of the wildly popular series was announced in 2008. In January this year, Paramount announced that all four lead roles were to be played by more or less well-known young Caucasian actors.

Let's Manga on the radio again

Well, not strictly about the project, but it's still us talking about manga. Until the beginning of June, the Belgian Comic Strip Museum is hosting an exhibition on manga, which should be of great interest especially to those not very familiar with Japanese comics.

Workshop on manga and fan culture at Groenendaalcollege high school

Yesterday we organized a Dutch-language workshop on manga and fan culture for fifth-years at the Groenendaalcollege high school. Students attended a presentation on manga and fan activities such as dojinshi and fan fiction and then used characters from their own favorite movies/TV series/comics to make a short intro to manga in comic book form.
