Four thousand entries in the manga research knowledge base!

Our manga research knowledge base saw its 4000th entry today. By way of self-congratulation, we bookmarked the site of our own new manga lending library as the magic number. Three fourths of those four thousand links point to academic information, the rest are noteworthy mentions of manga and/or other areas of Japanese popular culture outside an academic setting.

Manganovel service folds, which is a good thing

Digital Strips announces the end of Manganovel, the commercial scanlation effort whose exploitative attitude towards manga fans we discussed at its launch in October 2007 and again a few months later.

Cartoon crimes are real

Via Slashdot: Virginia judges rule that anime depictions of child rape are equivalent to child porn involving actual children under US law, because "it is not a required element (...) that the minor depicted actually exists". I suppose we should count ourselves lucky that our manga library is not located in the US, as we have several series that deal with abuse of non-existent children.

Manga library closed for holidays

Famous geek news site discovers the wonders of information manga while reviewing the translation of "The manga guide to statistics". Which deserves mention, as this is the first time manga is permitted into the hallowed halls of Slashdot.
