value of manga market dropping
Also from ComiPress: last year, the value of the manga market (tankobon and magazines) in Japan declined below 500 billion yen. Several reasons are given, including the steadily decreasing number of young people in Japan and the fact that this core audience is more focused on entertainment on cell phones rather than print media. Non-print sections of the media mix, such as anime and live-action film adaptations of manga, continue to grow.
Especially the decline of magazine sales was apparently eye-catching. I can access only a brief synopsis of the original report on the site of the Research Institute for Publications (出版科学研究所ホームページ), but having heard so much about a supposed boom in online and cellphone-delivered manga, I reckon that sales from that were perhaps not taken into account.
