'Death Note' controversy in China still not dying down

In our last post, we mentioned that Chinese authorities were cracking down on what they deemed to be 'harmful' horror stories, including the manga 'Death Note'. It's been several months since this issue was first reported in the press, and the dust refuses to settle: according to the Daily Yomiuri, there was another sweep for 'harmful' material last week. I was interested to notice how the DY repeatedly (three times in a very short article) described the action as directed against pirated DVDs and books. With authorities openly describing the measures as intended to protect children from content detrimental to their mental health, and familiar complaints about foreign cultural invasions ringing in the background, one wonders if the materials would be left alone even if they were not pirated.
From now on I'll collect any further information about this issue in our del.icio.us account, tag manga_in_china. Using del.ico.us instead of Furl may or may not be a good idea, given that we're dealing with perhaps fast-disappearing news articles and del.icio.us doesn't save page copies, but the copies I save in Furl are only visible to me anyway. And I want to try and accomplish something using a service other than Furl for once.
