Drafting a classification system for a new manga collection

We'll very shortly begin turning our current four shelves of manga into a collection worthy of the name, which forces us to look at a) how to decide what manga to purchase for an academic collection, and b) how to catalog the books. In her paper on the subject, Allison Raab identifies two ways of constructing a manga collection: a holistic approach that seeks to assemble representative manga from every historical period and genre, necessarily involving a considerable budget, or a more selective approach of buying only that which is immediately useful for researchers and students.

Kyoto International Manga Museum opens

Last Saturday saw an auspicious moment for the field of manga study: the opening of Kyoto's new International Manga Museum. The museum, made by the city of Kyoto in cooperation with Kyoto Seika University (which has a four-year manga curriculum), currently has a collection of 200 000 manga. This figure is supposed to reach 300 000 by 2008.

The museum is administered by the university and aims to host exhibitions -at present one on manga around the world- and further manga research, both by conducting its own and by collaborating on domestic and international research projects. It will also train educators wishing to teach about manga, among a variety of other ambitious goals, all outlined nicely in english or japanese.
