michael's blog

Available for download

I have been using this site for quite a while as a tool of sharing knowledge, especially knowledge found on the web, such as Wikipedia's excellent finance-pages (including its List of Finance Topics), dictionaries of financial terms, or pages with scientific papers available on the pages of the Bank of Japan.

Back on track...

After a one-year stay at the Library of Congress and aen enormous amount of work, I am finally able to take this weblog back on track. More news to follow soon!

Zotero webcast - Library of Congress

Remember the Zotero-event at the Library of Congress which I helped organizing? The webcast is now online: enjoy!

IMES papers

There are some new papers of interest to the financial historian on the IMES-pages. Below are the abstracts and links:

Cogniview CC license to PDF output

Through the Creative Commons weblog:

This has already been picked up by at least one blogger, and I’ve been remiss in not blogging it earlier. Cogniview has developed an open source tool for embedding CC license metadata in PDF output. You can find a screencast and download information on their website.

The CC PDF Converter takes a slightly different approach than most of the other tools we’ve seen. It’s installed as a Windows printer and allows the user to select a license when they “print” a PDF of their document. The tool embeds license metadata in the document as XMP and provides an optional facility for “stamping” the document with visible CC license information — either as a small image in the header or footer, or as a full-page deed appended to the document.

O.P. Austin, 'Adoption of the Gold Standard in Japan'

Currently working in the Kluge Center of the Library of Congress, I found a report about Matsukata Masayoshi's 1899 publication on the adoption of the gold standard in Japan. As this report is probably quite rare (and its existence unknown), I scanned it into a .pdf file and uploaded it in the 'available for download'-node.

JACAR: Japan Center for Asian Historical Records

One of the most exciting contemporary tools for students of Japanese financial history, or better: Japanese history altogether is JACAR (English page here), a database administered by the National Archives of Japan. In its own words:

This is for the bookmarks. The Bank of Japan's Institute for Monetary and Economic Studies added a photo collection about the construction of the Bank's old wing.
