Nele Noppe's PhD research examines Japanese- and English-language fanwork, meaning transformative fiction, art, comics, and so on, and considers how fannish creations function within the broader cultural environment in which they thrive. The research places special emphasis on the way gender issues, legal conditions, and technological developments influence the changing roles and potential of fanwork in the cultural economy of Japan and the world.
